Remember the scene in which Jane Carter (aka Paula Patton) emerges from a sleek car in Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol, which was prominently displayed in trailers? That sleek sexy car was none other than the BMW i8 concept car, first unveiled at 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. The production version of BMW i8 was put up at last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show which was a coupe and is destined to hit the showrooms in 2014. The company has recently announced the BMW i8 Spyder which would be a plug in hybrid just like the i8 coupe.
BMW i8 Spyder is based on the Concept Vision Efficient Dynamics design on which the i8 coupe is designed.BMW i8 Spyder would be a 2 seater four-wheel drive just like the i8 coupe. It would feature a powertrain comprising of a 223hp, turbocharged 3-cylinder engine powering the rear wheels and 131hp electric motor powering the front wheels.Being a hybrid it would sport a lithium-ion battery for the electric motors. The battery would take 2 hours to charge fully when connected to a standard 220V supply.
The performance would be similar to the i8 coupe. It can attain 0-62mph in a matter of 5 seconds. It would have a range of 20 miles on electric alone and would have a mileage of 94mpg.
The i8 Spyder would sport a aluminum chassis and would most probably feature windshields, fenders and doors made from polycarbonate glass just like the i8 coupe.Since i8 Spyder is a open-top version of i8 coupe it will sport a removable roof expected to be made of carbon-fiber reinforced plastic.
It is expected to be launched in 2015. And if you are very curious to have a glance don’t forget to mark your presence at the Beijing Motor Show scheduled later this month.
