After a very long wait Origin has finally empowered gamers to configure their own gaming laptops. So what are positive and highly enthusiastic gamers looking at? They are seeing a base model provided by Origin which can be bought for $1525 and can be configured to the world’s fastest PC mankind has ever seen. Origin has launched 2 laptops the EON 15 S and EON 17 S which are 15.6 and 17.6 inches respectively.
Why do we consider them as super powerful laptops? Well for starters buyers have the choices of 2 very capable and insanely quick graphics processors, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580M and the AMD Radeon HD 6990M which definitely ensures that you have the most powerful gaming laptop on planet earth right now. The EON 15 S is based on the Clevo P150 HM (X) platform like many other gaming laptops are based currently on.
DESIGN AND BUILD:
The design of this machine has been made amazingly discreet. At the very first look it is almost impossible to tell whether this is any ordinary laptop or a super gaming monster. No flashing LED’s or other drama that are naturally associated with a gaming pc, just plain simple yet very a rugged build. The screen sports a very crisp 1920X1080 resolution and looks sharp in color. The entire machine is black in color like its counterparts from Asus or Alienware and has a rubberized material at the base/bottom. The touch pad too is made from a different material which is unorthodox for most laptops and takes some getting used to. Once one gets used to the buttons and overall feel of the touchpad, it becomes very comfortable and ergonomic to use. Origin has also provided a fingerprint detector to add to the sense of security and does provide a sub-woofer which can be tweaked by the THX TruStudio Pro application to optimize the noise levels.
With a very powerful graphic chip there are some obvious downsides associated with the machine too, notable are the battery life, the always active cooling system and the amount of noise some games force the hardware to produce when playing in Ultra mode. Heat is a serious issue and Origin has taken some wise steps in providing the rightly placed fans along with appropriately sized vents.
The device is equipped with 2 USB 3.0 ports 1 USB 2.0, a firewire , an HDMI and a DVi-D port. Plus it also supports e-SATA and RJ-45 LAN ports. The overall design gives a very solid impression that the machine is built to last and endure any hardships that the user might throw.
Lets get down to the business end of this beast. Its clear that anyone who buys this laptop will at all cost want to extract every drop of juice from it. The scores achieved by this machine justify that it indeed is true to its nature (a genuine gaming laptop). There are quite a few bench-marks available but we stuck to the 3D mark line up. 3DMark 11 for DX11,and 3DMark Vantage for DX10 were the benchmarks used on the laptop to scale its performance. Here are a few stats that we would like to provide:
3D Mark Vantage :
- EON 15 S - 15092
- Asus G53 SX- 8360
- Alienware M14x 6360
3D Mark 11 :
- EON 15S - 3590
- Asus G53 SX- 2168
- Alienware M14x - 1280
The nearest competitors, Asus and the Alienware are capable of playing almost any and every type of game but the EON is way ahead of them. The benchmark for the Asus immediately jumped when an SSD version was tried on for the test. The reason we have such high 3D mark rating on the EON is its Solid State Drive. Where as the Alienware and the Asus were both using 7200 RPM hard disks.
Some of the games that we tried on were HAWX 2 ,STALKER call of pripyat, Resident Evil 5, Crysis 2. All of them were running on 1920X1080 resolution with ‘ultra’ mode on. It became clear that GT 580M can handle any game with ease. However we tried out the ultimate graphics demanding game of the world “metro 2033 ” and found that it runs well only in low settings. Nevertheless modern graphics card have been customized to take full advantage of low settings too. So you shouldn’t be too bothered about graphics chips.

PROS AND CONS:
Well to sum it all up there is hardly any doubt that EON is by far is the greatest gaming laptop we have seen (after some customization). It runs seamlessly without any problem what so ever, provides a full HD resolution and is lighter than any gaming laptop available in the same size category. However it does produce some noise when dealing with high end games in “ultra” mode and provides a battery life of only 100 mins. The goal for Origin is clear: To provide the fastest laptop in the world that a large amount of money can buy. If you have the will and wealth to spend the large bucks then we say ” JUST GO FOR IT”.
